Not to disparage anyone, but, I think one of the worst things this fandom has done is make it acceptable to like Yut-Lung unironically. The things he did are far beyond justification by his trauma or his age.
He literally:
Solicited men to r@pe Jessica (his brothers were involved, but remember, Yue was the only one that knew that Max was there) in order to get Max and Ash out of the house so he could DRUG Eiji and Ibe. Not to mention he threatened to have Nadia assaulted or killed if Shorter didn’t cooperate
Was an essential component in Shorter’s murder
Perpetuated that Ash was the one who killed Shorter to Shorter’s gang (people that Ash is supposed to be able to trust). I can’t imagine the pain that Ash endured at the hands of Yue. After being made to shoot Shorter, after having to see Shorter’s dead body being experimented on, and BEING SHOWN HIS ACTUAL BRAIN, he has Yue telling people from his BEST FRIEND’s gang that HE was the one who killed him, but it was way more complicated and it was actually Yue who played an essential part in Shorter’s murder.
Tried to gaslight Eiji into believing that he didn’t love Ash as much as Ash loved him and made it seem as if Eiji was worthless then encouraged him to commit suicide. This has so many layers to it. Eiji ALREADY feels worthless in his own life because of losing his scholarship and not having a stable home life. Then he also feels useless because he’s not used to Ash’s lifestyle. AND HE WAS ALREADY DEPRESSED. WHY WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE A DEPRESSED PERSON (or anyone) TO KILL THEMSELVES?
Planted the seeds in Lao’s head that Ash killed Shorter without even caring about what would happen to Lao. Shorter’s gang members were just pawns for him. And Lao was killed because of this.
The IDEA of Sing/Yue is cute but I honestly don’t know how that would work because Yue basically had Sing’s BROTHER killed. And he was really two-faced to Sing because while he pretended to be cool with Sing, he was plotting to essentially get his friends and brother killed.
Just because Yue never directly hurt/killed anyone (bar the time he drugged Eiji and Ibe) and because he had trauma DOESN’T make it okay to manipulate people into sexually assaulting and murdering people that have NOTHING to do with his trauma.
blanca was the one who wronged both yut lung and ash though. and what do you think about headcanons like eiji redeeming yue like he did ash and them being best friends?
Blanca didn’t fail Yut lung like he did Ash? He did desert Ash but with Yut Lung the situation was different? First time Ash was 13 in the cluches of his abuser and then 19 and hunted down. Yut Lung upon Blanca meeting him was 18, free from his abusers, in a position of power, his freaking employer and unhinged. What do people expect from Blanca to do for Yut Lung here, be his therapist? Stay and keep servicing the toxic person and try to “fix him”? Yut Lung rejects friendships if people aren’t acting like he wants them to anyway. And essentialy he looked at Blanca as his devoted underling more than anything. Blanca was honest with him, gave some good advice for once and proceeded to go help Ash finally, can’t really blame him there. Blanca wronged him because he ruined Yut Lung’s plans by refusing his awful orders which made him feel bad? Yut Lung’s the one who keeps making others suffer, yet we’re constantly supposed to feel bad for him? Because they stand up for themselves and their friends and leave him? Neither Blanca nor Sing or Eiji owe him anything, he’s not a victim in relation to them.
Btw how can anyone throw a tantrum and whitewash Yut Lung partnering up with a pedo, preventing club cod from getting exposed in the media and not caring how thanks to this abuse will be going on, forcing Ash to go back to his rapist because Ash’s a beast for him, what he did with Lao, Eiji and Sing, idk was he forced to murder his brothers wives and children who were likely victims, too or it doesn’t count because he’s an 18 years old?
HC of Eiji and Yut Lung being besties is OOC for me, usually it entails Yut Lung being being a flamboyant alpha bitch and Eiji being the boring one who takes being deingrated with patient sighs and indulges him or them having girly sleepovers.
I also dislike the HC of Eiji taking responsibility for fixing/healing/saving Yut Lung? This HC stems from this view of Yut Lung as a vulnerable hurting woobie who didn’t mean what he did and just needed a hug. And how he’s like Ash so Eiji can do what he does for Ash. Yut Lung and Ash aren’t the same. It’s like saying Arthur and Ash are the same because they both killed people. Yut Lung choose his ridiculous cosplay as Big Baddie and didn’t care that what he did was horrific, he gloated about it. Didn’t have anyone who hunted him, wasn’t in a situation where he had to fight for his freedom after he killed his brothers but still went after people who literally didn’t do anything to him. See the difference?
First off Ash cared for Eiji, equally selflessly and despite what Blanca said didn’t just use Eiji as an emotional crutch or treated him like a service. Second, Eiji and his friends are Yut Lung’s victims. Are they not at least as vulnerable? The idea of Eiji coddling the person who despised him, ordered to have him/ash shoot/stabbed and made ppl he loves suffer showing no remorse is uncomfortable to me. Nobody should take it upon themselves to befriend their bully. Eiji’s kind and empathetic but not a doormat, he stood up for himself and set boundaries. Everyone talks about Eiji’s mental health and how he’s not subservient but when it comes to Yut Lung we should wish for Eiji to do emotional labour for him, someone who’s treated Eiji with scorn and put him down constantly? Be a comfort provider for someone who put a person he loves through hell? He doesn’t exist to serve and cater to possible needs and well being of the person who acted abusive towards him and didn’t even acknowledge it. Nobody should be expected to maintain a relationship, care and try to change someone who abused them even if it’s because they’re damaged. Abused isn’t even covering it here though, he didn’t just stop on feeding his own ego proclaiming how he’s better than everyone. As Yut Lung freed himself his goal became being this cartoon villain complete with deranged laughter and he ordered to kill both Eiji and Ash and his machinations ensured Eiji got shot and Ash got stabbed in turn. Funniest of it all is, everyone forgets about it just like almost all main characters forget that he even exists when not in direct presence while Yut Lung is obsessed about them. I don’t think Yut Lung is even on Eiji’s radar 99.9% of the time. He drones on and on how much of a failure Eiji is and yet you can’t think of more stereotypical loser than him considering nobody ever even spares him a thought.
Yut Lung should redeem himself by himself and I wish we stopped acting as if he didn’t actually do anything ever or didn’t cause anything or what he did wasn’t his fault, poor him. He isn’t entitled to other characters he hurt making him feel good and becoming stepping stones to his possible recovery.
All attempts at invalidating/redirecting the discussion about him I see are gross and kids thinking they take the high moral ground by stanning him and judging everyone who doesn’t are weird.
Sorry but Yut Lung was literally forced by his brothers to be involved in Banana Fish conflict and he's a minor. Bet you're one of these people who excuse Ash out of every crime he commited but hate Yue because he hurt poor Ash's feewlings lmao
I get an impression everyone is busy fanon cherry picking and forget what characters actually did?
Even if you excuse Yut Lung’s actions up till Shorter’s death by saying he acted upon his brothers will (he was quite gleefully complicit tho), after that he eliminates his brothers and has all the power and choices he makes are all fully his. And he isn’t a 16 year old by the time he’s actively involved in forcing Ash to become Golzine’s prisoner, he’s approximately 18 when “hurting Ash’s feewlings”. Wonder if Ash wanted to make Yut Lung to go back to his abusers you’d also call it “hurting his feewlings”. Last but not least, he murdered his brothers wives and their children who were completely innocent.
We can compare Yut Lung and Ash’s decisions, motivations and circumstances and the result would be positively damning for Yut Lung. The only thing in common is that they were abused as kids but in the end came out vastly different and can’t blame that entirely on Yut Lung supposedly having less of a support network than Ash (out of his own doing too). His ambition was literally being this grand evil overlord and drag everyone down to make sure others suffer and couldn’t understand how Ash would want to reject that path. Yut Lung is just a selfish and irritating character, he hurts people because of his creepy delusions, has no regrets, only self pity when his plans fall apart.
Remember that he was 18 not 10 when he willingly run to work with Golzine knowing and unbothered by Golzine’s line of business and was heavily involved in coercing Ash to go back to Golzine. Later at the party when the gang was breaking Ash out Yut Lung wanted to prevent it, then he sent out his thugs on a killing spree after everyone, not even caring at this point that Sing who showed him sympathy earlier could die too. And we’re supposed to feel bad for him because everyone picked Ash then, were they supposed to stay and let themselves be used as servants and pawns on Yut Lung’s stupid quest? I saw many posts saying Blanca indirectly caused Ash’s death because he told Ash he will be always defined by his past lifestyle, what about Yut Lung who insisted on that too and who was the one to directly incite Lao and foster the conflict between him and Sing against Ash.
Point is why him being 18 should excuse all that? It doesn’t make him not see what he’s doing. He isn’t a little poor rich boy lost blindly lashing out. He has these grandoise ideas of being a king of hell~ and sees everyone who’s according to him weaker as a victim. He collaborated with a pedo, was complicit in getting other characters assaulted, murdered children and their mothers out of spite. Please don’t tell me trauma makes people do evil things bc its offensive. He was hurt as a kid but then began hurting other people for no reason himself in a way others didn’t. Like him all you want but you’re not edgy or outsmarting anyone by doing so.
When did Yut Lung become
this fanon ~`FABULOUS* queen bee persona everyone should bow to? Why when someone criticises him there’s this sharp response and excuses? Like him if you want but don’t justify and don’t trash ppl for expressing dislike.
Hypocritical how it’s alright when fandom nonstop voices disgust over some people liking or explaining Blanca and affirms he is bad so everyone should condemn him but when it comes to Yut Lung it’s suddenly ohh you can’t judge morality of BF characters. Double standards much then? Blanca is (rightfully) hated because he made Ash go back to his abuser and maintained Ash is destined to be a glorified killer and should dump Eiji but Yut Lung did the same was even more nasty about it because you can argue Blanca did this thinking it would be better for Ash while Yut Lung did it solely for his own selfish delusions and cringy creepy obsession of Ash as a demon beast.
But when it comes to Yut Lung it’s never mentioned and when someone dares it’s suddenly oh you can’t judge good/bad of him and how dare you dislike him, he can’t be held accountable for purposefully hurting others because he had trauma or all of this somehow wasn’t his choice. With Blanca at least people don’t excuse things he did by pointing out his trauma or Ash’s deeds but when it comes to Lao or Yut Lung who did shit things from malice it’s like noo it was all defense/survival. At the point he got rid of his brothers he could have backed off, he was free unlike all the other characters, but he decided to suck up to Golzine and ruin it for everyone for the sake of his corny ideas.
I don’t care to argue which character people should like or dislike from a moral standpoint at all just wish people stopped cherry picking which character is justified and protected from all criticism and try to make everyone toe the line. Like so many ppl drone on and on about what everyone else did but get mad when someone even mentions their fave is responsible for something beyond wine drinking and if you think he is you’re just blinded by Ash and Eiji, it’s ridiculous. It’s like rewriting all BF plot to make him into this fanon character. I’d suggest to just admit he did what he did and still stan him but honestly and without bullying, in which case nobody cares.
I think it all boils down to Akimi Yoshida really loving and sharing the “mindset” of all those ambiguous 80’s movies. She often seems more passionate about them than about her own work… Fatal endings, unstraightforward relationships, unfulfilled soulmates and all that is glaringly problematic to us now she copied like mad not caring how it agrees with her own plot/characters and mixed in her own additional wtf disturbing punches for good measure. Add her own indecisiveness as to where she wants her story to go and inconsistent writing, character development going back and forth and it’s no wonder fans are annoyed and confused while she seems genuinely surprised they can think the scenario could be different as she flippantly scratches out what seemed obvious to her readers. She’s so fixed on the vibe and aesthetic neglecting anything else like how her own story is written and how it unfolds to us that’s why half of her readership thinks it’s not well thought out and the other half praises it and explains how it fits the themes.
Like it’s great Ash was based on River Phoenix and all characters he played in movies like Stand By me, Running on empty and MOPI but I wish things that happen to them weren’t straight up copied onto Ash. It’s enough to have Ash similar to Chris Chambers in a way that he’s a runaway kid who struggles with who people assume he is /bad/ he doesn’t have to get stabbed and die young too, make up your own damn story lol
Lol I remembered how weird the Hemingway’s leopard story meaning as told by Ash was, it was completely divorced from what Hemingway actually wrote just to imply the leopard/Ash dies he likes it or not because…you guessed it *~FATE*~
What are your general thoughts on the explanation of the translation error that person wrote?
I talked about it in the previous asks but even if it was fatal what I found incredulous was that Ash, after everything was said and done wouldn’t even go to see Eiji off (not even talking about going with him or keeping him in his life?). Till the last moment despite everything he was so hung upon this Blanca like bullshit? He ended the BF chapter for real but it still doesn’t get to Ash what Eiji said about him, that he can start anew until he got it on paper apparently but then of course Lao waltzes in with Bitches You Thought. And we are supposed to rejoice Ash finally understood something in the library, ohh he can change his fate he’s not just a killer but well, he can’t because it’s too late. How convenient. He at last doesn’t think he is but his “life” thinks he is. Ash now believes he can change his fate yet there his fate goes. But see Ash’s soul is saved! Took long enough and no chance to even do anything about it but such is LIFE lol.
If you like asheiji au fanfic, you should check out “your best american boy” by suffragettecity . *chefs kiss* its coming of age kind of story but its so good. but if you dont like au stuff, ignore this!!!
Speaking of tragedy porn, there is this book called A Little Life written by Hanya Yanagihara. I read the Wiki summary and i felt so disgusted. Its literally putting every trigger warning you could possibly think. Why do authors think this is well written? There must be a fine line between genuinely well written and then just wanking off from tragedy porn. Oh and guess what, the main character dies too lmao.
Because people seem to think the more crazy dramatic/horrible stuff the more deep/serious the work is. Such a childish outlook. Like sometimes life can be brutal but fiction isn’t more real just because you go over the top with gore. Actually it can become downright silly and bad taste.
